Hurricane Dorian developed on August 24 as a tropical wave in the central Atlantic. Further development occurred from August 26 to August 28; the storm affected Caribbean nations and territories devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. Hurricane Dorian was the fifth tropical storm of the season. As Dorian crossed St. Lucia in the Eastern Caribbean as a tropical storm, the system gradually intensified while moving toward the Lesser Antilles before becoming a hurricane on August 28. Elsewhere in the Lesser Antilles, impacts from now hurricane Dorian were relatively minor.
Dorian rapidly intensified into a major Category
Four on August 31 and the next day Dorian reached Category 5 status with sustained winds of 185 mph.
On September 1 Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas in Elbow Cay, east of Abaco Island with 185 mph sustained winds and gusts over 200 mph. Dorian was now the most potent known tropical cyclone to impact the northwestern Bahamas. Only hours later Hurricane Dorian now a slightly weakened storm with 180 mph winds made landfall on Grand Bahama.
In essence, stopping forward motion for the next 36 hours Dorian remained over the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island from September 1 to September 3.
Hurricane Dorian started to weaken after an eyewall replacement cycle and became a category 2 hurricane on September 3, but regained category 3 status as it moved to warmer water off the Florida coast. From September 3 to September 4 Dorian slowly moved North up the Florida East coast without making landfall until reaching Cape Hatteras, North Carolina with wind speeds of 90 mph. More than 200,000 people were without power in North Carolina.
By September 7 Hurricane Dorian became Tropical storm Dorian with winds of 100 mph as it passed by Nova Scotia and out to the North Atlantic.

Cleanup along Oregon Inlet, North Carolina, has already started. On Sunday, Sept. 8, the sand and water that Hurricane Dorian blew onto the highway had to be moved back to the beaches where they came from.
